From Campus Tours to NHL Goals: A Memorable Week with Family – Week 30

Wheeling J. Uni. Mar 23, 2025

Another week has passed, and this one was packed with adventure. It started off slow—just a normal week with swim lessons and getting to know our new coach better. Nothing too special at first, just making my way through the usual routine.

But then Wednesday came around, and my roommate and I cleaned our room in preparation for some very special guests. Finally, Thursday arrived. I woke up bright and early for a 6 AM swim practice before heading straight into my first and only exam of the week—accounting. It went by fairly quickly, and I think it went well, but we’ll see once I get the results. After that, it was time for the highlight of my week—I finally got to meet my family! My mom, dad, and sister had come all the way to the U.S. to visit me. Oh, how I have missed them!

The rest of the day was all about showing them around campus, Wheeling, and spending quality time together. Walking through the university campus, I pointed out some of the places that had become part of my daily routine—the dorms, the pool, the gyms, and buildings—giving them a small glimpse into my life here. It felt so good having my family here in a place that had, for months, felt so far away from home. After the campus tour, we made our way to the highlands, entering Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Cabela’s, and so many more stores. They definitely got the full American shopping experience—especially with how overwhelming some of the stores can be compared to what we’re used to back home. It was fun seeing their reactions to things I’ve gotten used to.

Of course, no reunion is complete without food. We had some amazing meals together, trying different places and just enjoying each other's company. It was one of those days where time just slipped away. By the time we got back, it already felt like the trip was moving too fast.

Friday arrived, and we set off for Pittsburgh, an adventure we had all been looking forward to. The drive itself was nice, giving us plenty of time to talk and just enjoy being together—something I had really missed. Along the way, we stopped at an outlet mall, where we all did some shopping. I picked up some new clothes, and so did the rest of my family. Once we reached Pittsburgh, the energy of the city hit us. It was a refreshing change from Wheeling, and it was exciting to just take in the sights.

The highlight of the night was the NHL game—Penguins vs. Blue Jackets. Seeing a professional hockey game live was an incredible experience, and the atmosphere in the arena was something else. Even though I’m not a die-hard hockey fan, I had a great time. Between the game, the city, and the good food, the whole weekend felt like a perfect getaway.

We also visited the Andy Warhol Museum, which was an interesting stop. I’ll admit, I don’t know much about art, but it was cool to see his famous works and learn more about his life. After that, we explored the Strip District Market, a busy area full of different shops, food stands, and unique finds. It felt great just walking around, taking in the sights and sounds of the city, and, of course, eating amazing food.

But, as always, time went by too fast. Sunday came before I was ready, and soon, it was time to say goodbye. We drove to the airport, and I did my best to make the last moments count, but it’s never easy watching your family leave. I called an Uber back to campus, and as I sat in the car, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of emotions—grateful for the time we had but already missing them.

Hopefully, next week will be at least half as good as these past few days. Not long left now until I get to go home myself and see my family—and, of course, Ellen.
