Down but Not Out: A Week Full of Sick Days - Week 12

Wheeling J. Uni. Nov 17, 2024

This week has been, without a doubt, the most uneventful one yet. Monday started off fine, but everything quickly went downhill on Tuesday when I woke up feeling sick. I spent most of the day in bed, unable to swim or do much of anything. Unfortunately, I stayed sick through the week, missing Wednesday's competition. It was tough to sit out while my team traveled and competed without me. Thankfully, they still managed to secure a win, which was a relief, but it felt strange not being there to support them.

The rest of the week didn’t bring much improvement. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday were all the same story—me stuck in bed, battling a fever and a sore throat, and counting down the hours until I’d feel better. The boredom was almost as bad as being sick itself. Eating whatever medicine I had on hand and trying to rest was all I could do. I wasn’t even able to catch up on schoolwork, which has left me feeling behind and frustrated. Thankfully, by Sunday, I started to turn a corner. Although I still wasn’t well enough to swim, I finally felt like myself again, which was a huge relief.

One productive thing I managed to do this week was register for the next semester. I’ve signed up for all business classes, which should be interesting, but I can’t help missing math, computer science, and the subjects I loved back home. While I’m doing well academically, with straight A’s so far, I sometimes struggle to find joy in this work. Hopefully, I’ll find a way to make these classes more exciting and meaningful as the semester goes on.

Unfortunately, my recovery wasn’t the only challenge this week. Over the weekend, I was heartbroken to see how some of the people on my floor treated our dorm. On Sunday morning, I woke up to find the hallway trashed—there were mirrors, planks, paper, yogurt, food, and more scattered everywhere. It was shocking and sad to see the space treated with so little respect. I’ve always tried to take care of where I live, and it’s upsetting to share a floor with people who don’t seem to feel the same. It’s not just about the mess; it’s the lack of consideration for others that really bothers me.

All in all, this week has been a rough one, but I’m glad to be on the mend and looking forward to a fresh start next week. Here’s hoping for a cleaner hallway, healthier days, and maybe even some fun moments to make up for this week’s lows.
